We are delighted to celebrate artist Ben Mazey, recognised as one of Australia’s most sought-after contemporary artists by Broadsheet Melbourne. Mazey’s remarkable journey from seven years as design director at global fashion house Kenzo in Paris to becoming one of Australia’s leading ceramic artists reflects a unique intersection of fashion, design and sculpture.
Based in Melbourne, Mazey began his sculptural practice during the pandemic, when ceramics became an “accidental Covid pivot”. Working primarily with slab-built ceramics, he transforms everyday domestic forms - from vases and mirrors to curtains, tiles and decorative objects - into playful, cartoon-like sculptures that explore repetition, distortion and the beauty of imperfection. Drawing on influences from fashion, architecture, pop art and art history, his work balances humour, nostalgia and emotional expression with a distinctive sense of optimism.
Mazey’s recent solo exhibition "IF YOU CAN’T SEE THIS YOU MIGHT BE DEAD OR JUST NOT HERE" showcased his signature rippling forms alongside his first terracotta works and bronze totems, created during a residency at Milan’s historic Fonderia Artistica Battaglia. Named Vogue Living’s 2026 Collectable Designer of the Year, Mazey continues to redefine contemporary ceramics through his imaginative approach, transforming familiar objects into joyful, unexpected and deeply personal works.
