We are delighted to share that Michael McHugh has been featured in the latest BusinessDesk Editorial, highlighting the artist’s evolving practice and his recent move into sculpture.
The editorial recognises McHugh’s expanding artistic practice, with particular attention given to his new work in glass. His sculptural work Whirl was recently selected as one of 43 finalists in the 2026 Deakin Contemporary Small Sculpture Award, chosen from 670 entries.
The recognition comes at an exciting point in McHugh’s career, as he continues to develop a sculptural language alongside his established painting practice. Working primarily through gestural mark-making, layered abstraction, colour and organic forms, McHugh has begun translating many of these ideas into glass, introducing a new material dimension to the fantastical worlds explored throughout his paintings.
McHugh’s artistic development and recent transition into sculpture have also been profiled in the latest issue of Art Collector magazine, further highlighting the evolution of his practice and the experiences that have shaped this new direction.
