Where does sculpture begin? In a line, a drawing, a material, or the space an object occupies?
Bringing together works by New Zealand sculptor Edgar Mansfield and contemporary artists represented by Föenander Galleries, On Creation explores the expansive language of sculpture and its ability to move across disciplines, materials and generations.
The exhibition features works by Ben Mazey, Vipoo Srivilasa, Robert Jahnke, Natalie Guy, Nick Herd, Monica Rani Rudhar, Gavin Chai and Chauncey Flay, alongside a selection of Mansfield's historic sculptures.
An accomplished sculptor, draughtsman and pioneering bookbinder, Mansfield challenged traditional distinctions between fine art and craft. His practice explored the relationships between line, rhythm, texture and form across multiple disciplines. His celebrated Animism series was photographed by renowned New Zealand photographer Brian Brake, with these photographs now held in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Presented alongside contemporary sculptural practices, Mansfield's work becomes part of an ongoing conversation about material, process and the physical presence of objects. Connections emerge across different approaches and generations, revealing the enduring questions that continue to inform sculpture: how form is constructed, how materials are transformed, and how objects interact with the spaces they inhabit.
Set within the design-led environment of Good Form, On Creation extends this dialogue into the relationship between art and curated design objects. The exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter Mansfield's work in a contemporary context, while considering sculpture not as a fixed category, but as an evolving and interconnected creative language.
