Traces

A new collaborative project between Thomas Newman Pound and Roger Mortimer that

explores the relationship between archaeology, mythology, and iconography through the objects that evoke the appearance of discovered relics.

Working with coal-like carved surfaces and detailed silver markings, the artists have

constructed works that suggest traces of forgotten cultures, symbolic systems, and

imagined histories. Their compositions draw on a wide range of visual references, including

ancient navigational charts, inscriptions, celestial maps, and symbolic forms appearing

as fragments of a larger unknown narrative.

Traditions from art history are both subtly and overtly present, spanning the modern, the metaphysical, the religious, and threads of folk culture. Rather than presenting fixed meanings, the works remain open to interpretation, inviting viewers to engage in their own acts of discovery. Pound and Mortimer have created a body of work in which they hope the viewer may find themselves constructing a personal dialogue through the ritual of exploring the space between artifact and myth.
