Apocrypha: The Maps of Roger Mortimer is a finalist at the Best Awards 2022
Sep 22 2022
Roger Mortimer’s beautifully produced book, by Index Publishing, is a comprehensive survey of Roger’s map paintings, of the last 12 years.
The 160-page monograph is heavily illustrated with Roger’s intricately detailed works and will hold a special place in the landscape of contemporary NZ literature. An impressive line-up of writers and editors, from a variety of disciplines, have contributed to the insightful collection of six essays.
The editors say they hope the book will contribute to a discussion, not simply around the nature and place of New Zealand art, and its complex relationship to its European origins but also around contemporary Pākehā cultural identity and its relationship to Te Ao Māori. As art historian Leonard Bell writes in his essay; Mortimer’s pictorial mappings are productively improbable, outside the predictable and formulaic, just as the most intriguing contemporary art is.
Roger’s new book is priced at $65 and we have a number of signed copies available for sale at the gallery contact us to purchase a copy.
