Föenander Galleries was featured in the second instalment of the Aotearoa Art Fair x Sauce spotlight series, with gallery director Elle Föenander discussing the gallery’s origins, its approach to exhibiting artists, and its presentation for the 2024 fair.
Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Föenander Galleries was established with the intention of creating a space for a diverse range of practitioners whose work offers meaningful insights into the ideas and experiences shaping our time.
As Elle explains in the feature, the gallery’s programme extends beyond its Auckland home, with Föenander Galleries operating across a number of temporary spaces around the country. This approach allows the gallery to engage with different audiences while creating opportunities for artists to present their work in new contexts.
For the 2024 Aotearoa Art Fair, held at the Viaduct Events Centre, Föenander Galleries presented five artists working across distinct practices and stages of their careers: Gavin Chai, Nick Herd, Sung Hwan Bobby Park, Lottie Consalvo and Roger Mortimer.
The presentation brought together early-career painters, an emerging conceptual artist, an interdisciplinary practitioner and an established senior artist, demonstrating the breadth of the gallery’s programme.
Despite their different approaches and disciplines, the five artists were brought together around a shared exploration of diversity and the human desire for connection.
The feature provides a concise insight into the philosophy behind Föenander Galleries and its commitment to presenting artists whose practices contribute meaningfully to contemporary conversations.
Through its participation in Aotearoa Art Fair, the gallery continued to create a dialogue between diverse artistic perspectives, connecting artists, audiences and ideas within the wider New Zealand art community.
