Introducing the remarkable Kym Elphinstone Rundle, whose passionate advocacy of artists is both far-reaching and profound.
As an art advisor, writer, and founder of Articulate Advisory, Kym brings extraordinary vision and sensitivity to her work, guiding collectors and institutions in building meaningful connections with contemporary art.
Her contributions extend across the cultural sphere — from her leadership roles with Firstdraft and Sydney Contemporary to her acclaimed publication Collecting: Living With Art reflecting her enduring commitment to artists, ideas, and the power of art to shape how we live.
What is your creative discipline? I’m an arts advisor, consultant and advocate for the arts. Through my agency Articulate, we grow audiences for the arts. My work sits at the junction of artists, institutions and galleries, the media and collectors.
What role does intuition play in your approach? Intuition is essential to me and underlies all of my interactions, from considering a new project for Articulate or my art advisory to assessing new work by an artist.
A common myth about your industry? It’s glamorous.
Are there particular places, histories, or cultural threads you find yourself returning to? I’m lucky enough to work across many First Nations artist projects with Articulate and continue to be in awe of the knowledge and histories being conveyed.
What has been a particularly memorable encounter/environment? Working with Marina Abramovich on 13 Rooms for Kaldor Public Art Projects was something I’ll never forget - the presence, the intensity!More recently working on Archie Moore’s ‘kith and kin’ presentation at the Australian Pavilion for the 2024 Venice Biennale when it took out the Gold Lion.
Least favourite trend? Celebrity founded brands.
Artwork to match the curtains, or the person? Definitely the person but I’m also open to an artwork challenging - rather than matching - the person.
A must read? A Secret History by Donna Tartt.
A must listen? Radiohead’s In Rainbows album from start to finish.
Favourite dish? Sicilian red prawn, scallop sashimi, Merimbula oysters - all the raw things.
If you could undertake any project, without limits, what would you pursue? Build an experimental private art gallery inspired by and focused around the work of emerging contemporary artists.
One thing you can’t work without? My team at Articulate.
If you met your younger self, what would you say to her? I wouldn’t want to spoil the lessons waiting to be learnt along the way, so probably not all that much.
You can invite any three individuals to dinner, who do you invite? Rashid Johnson, Judy Dench and Marina Abramovic.
A hero? Any artist undertaking sacrifices to pursue a professional career.
If you could live with any artwork of your choosing, which one would it be? Emily Kam Kngwarray’s Wild Yam V 1995 or a Cy Twombly.
