Lottie Consalvo is a celebrated artist living and working on the land of the Awabakal and Worimi people in both Newcastle and Pindimar NSW, Australia. Consalvo’s works explore the human psyche, imagination, dreams, memory and their place in the real.

Stylistically, Lottie’s work appears to be an extension of the abstract expressionist tradition but conceptually more closely related to Surrealism – in its exploration of dreams and past experiences However, her work is perhaps closer still in spirit to that of Agnes Martin, who used the extreme limitations on palette and structure expected of Minimalism to provoke a spiritual, rather than, intellectual response to the painted surface.

Lottie Consalvo’s works explore the human psyche, imagination, dreams, memory and their place in the real. With a practice traversing painting, performance, video, and sculpture, she looks at the physicality of the overwhelming presence of thought and the impact the mind has on all living things. She parallels these natural phenomena of the mind by investigating the human connection to nature, desire, longing, loss and the ungraspable.

Consalvo’s performances are observations of transformative experiences, often taking form as video or live performances. More recently the artist utilised the imagination of the audience to present a performance where she was not physically present, but rather the audience witnessed her actions within their minds. Her paintings further this conversation where the artist creates a physical presence for thought, imagination, memory, and psychological transitions. Consalvo paintings are often monumental forms with vast empty spaces. Working with a restricted palette across mediums, the artist often grasps onto forms and uses the high contrast of opposing dark and light to mark out a place for the unknown and the intangible.

Her recent public exhibitions include; ‘Somewhere Else’, Maitland Regional Art Gallery (2019); ‘I Tried To Make A Horizon For You’, Casula Powerhouse (2019); ‘In The Remembering’, Heide Museum of Modern Art, (2018). She has been extensively exhibited around Australia, most recently in Goulburn, Newcastle, and Lake Macquarie. She has participated in numerous residency programs across Australia and Germany, and notably selected to participate in a residency with Marina Abramovic for the 30th Kaldor Public Art Project in 2015.

Roger Mortimer was born in Mangakino, New Zealand in 1956. Since graduating with a BFA from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1999, Mortimer has exhibited regularly in Auckland and Wellington. His work was included in the Artspace shows Flesh and Fruity and After Killeen (2001) in Auckland, Portraiture (2003) at Te Tuhi, Pakuranga, and High Chair (2005) at ST PAUL St Gallery, Auckland.

In 2014 he was the Paramount winner of the Wallace Art Awards and subsequently spent six months at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York. His work is included in public and private collections in New Zealand, Australia and France. Roger Mortimer currently lives and works in Auckland.

Mortimer is interested in the nature of attachment in the psychological sense. When this fundamental relational need is disrupted, it generates conflict, adaptive behavior and intense suffering. His paintings explore these themes and have been described as “

an allegorical scrambling of time and geography, that pushes at the limits of the human imagination

” [1], giving rise to a dense layering of colliding or intertwined worlds and systems. In Mortimer’s fantastical landscapes and watery coasts, people and creatures enact dynamic vignettes of horror and suffering, as well as the possibility of transformation

Nick Herd, born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau and has a Bachelor in Art and Design from AUT. Painting has always been a part of Herd’s life - gradually taking over - as his practice explores what it means to be human. Herd’s current practice depicts abstracted human subjects and floral arrangements, both representing a captivating study of existence. His energetic brushstrokes preserve a subtle interplay of emotion, vulnerability, and a resilience that define living species. Herd’s work is characterised by expressionistic mark making and unrefined - sometimes grotesque - figurative depiction which navigate the tensions between embodiment and liminality.

Known for his thick application of paint, referred to technically as impasto, Herd has carved out a recognisable style distinctly his own. With a sophisticated palette and incredible artistic restraint - especially when using excessive amounts of oil paint, the artist captures movement and life in every textured stroke. His thick gestural application of paint, explores the performative nature of painting and the physical discharge of energy and anxiety; where the subject becomes a vessel for contemplating the human experience.

Herd’s recent series of still life oil paintings, are offered to us both in paint and sculpted form. With radically layered textures, and bold defining strokes; the flowers appear as if they are moving across the canvas. The artistic process for Herd, originates with fresh floral arrangements which he paints over a series of days; meaning that each time he sits to paint the arrangement has bloomed, decayed or moved. This transformation of subject, results in a series of paintings full of play and motion with oil paint laid on so thickly that the texture of the palette knife is clearly visible.

’s practice draws upon a rich history of cultural heritage and painting techniques and to represent contemporary experiences. Chai’s current works focus’ on interior spaces and makes reference to the traditions of Dutch & Danish painting from the 17th – 19th Century. His influences are a blend of historical, as well the personal and present, making allusions to classical & biblical themes with timeless allegories.

Chai’s hauntingly vivid works with their humble subject matter – set within waiting rooms and unassuming domestic environments – turn our attention to the intimacy of the ordinary and sometimes ethereal quality of the ‘every day’. With his use of shallow space, high contrast lighting and the theatrical arrangements of objects – Chai infuses his ‘seemingly’ mundane subject matter with sense of growing intensity or subdued drama. His awareness of traditional painting techniques and employment of figurative realism, provides an understated elegance to his empty rooms which command our careful attention as they grapple with timeless themes.

The worlds Chai constructs in his paintings display a striking sense of the surreal with an eerie sense of anticipation or even unease(?). Within these ambiguous paintings there is always something with their arrangement or narrative content to make connection to: an open door, the light through window or the unusual worlds depicted through windows. Gavin’s work is never about arriving at a point, but rather, the anticipation of a future prospect while being on the way.

Gavin graduated with Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT in 2020 and has been a regular finalist and recipient of art awards since 2014, most recently making history by winning all three categories (New Youth Award, The Excellence Award, Overall Supreme Award) at the Otago Art Awards in 2021.
