Ramon Robertson has been working as an artist in Auckland, New Zealand since arriving in 2011. Prior to this, he lived in Glasgow, Scotland where he also worked as an artist, designer and tertiary lecturer.

In 1992 Ramon graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art Sculpture and in 1997 he completed a MA in Interior Design at Manchester Metropolitan University, for which he undertook sculpture and installation projects related to interiors and architecture.

Robertson’s work typically engages with aspects of architecture and urbanisation. The mass production and standardisation of objects is also a focus, in particular, the observation of the effects of our visual perception in regards to objects and environment. Themes linking to human condition and behaviour in the city are also concepts explored in his work.

Ramon has exhibited widely in Auckland since 2011, including ‘NZ Sculpture OnShore’ in 2012, 2014 and 2016, as well as the ‘Harbourview Sculpture Trail’ in 2014 and 2016, winning the 

for his sculpture ‘Void’ in 2014. Robertson was invited to exhibit in the prestigious ‘Sculpture in the Gardens’ at the Auckland Botanical Gardens, in both 2015 and 2017 and was recently commissioned by the Wallace Arts Trust Collection for a large outdoor work at Pah Homestead.

Andrea Bolima is a visual artist, born in the Philippines and is now based in Naarm Melbourne. Andrea Bolima’s adventures in aesthetics are fuelled by the visual qualities of experience from the actual process of painting. The artworks reveal the layering and unlayering of forms as structural elements slowly unfold and sometimes deteriorate. Bolima’s sensitivity to her surroundings can be seen from the subtle shifts in tone and delicate splashes of colour. Tonal variations demonstrate the different levels of intensity that emerge from the materiality of paint. Colours are blended and established on the canvas itself showing her mediation between careful considerations and random gestures.

Bolima’s recent work is an exploration of how a work of art emerges from the transition between stimulus and response. In particular, it examines the body’s mediation from the affective properties of paint, into the multiple dimensions of colour as a painting unfolds. 

Softly coloured canvases, with their blurred ambiguous forms made through the dry brushing of thin acrylic, could from a distance be mistaken for stained colour or wet application. Using landscape or vegetative colours and no sharp edges of shape, Bolima creates a spatial tension between the flatness of the canvas and suggestions of flowers, leaves, copses or cliff-faces. She is expert at creating linear gaps between adjacent blocks of thin colour, so that the pale hues underneath form fragmented bending lines that are nuanced and suggestive”. [1]

Michael McHugh has been painting for more than thirty years. His practice has consistently explored colour, composition and textural, abstract form with a strong connection to the natural world. McHugh collects a range of different photographs and drawings during research trips visiting museums, libraries and gardens around the world, returning to his studio to draw and create a series of collages, which lead to large format paintings.

With the use of gestural acrylic mark making, McHugh creates a layered abstraction moving between the paintings’ surface and botanical shapes. Works are sometimes sombre and brooding, and at other times energetic and vibrant, with textural layers echoing moments in time. McHugh believes constant drawing and collaging to be fundamental to his painting process. This foundation enables him to fully explore composition and vigorously push boundaries with colour and technique.

Graduating from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in New Zealand, he has attended masterclasses in painting at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. He currently works in the creative media industry and also exhibits his work in Sydney, Australia. McHugh’s work is held in a number of private collections in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
