Adrian Jackman
Biography
Adrian Jackman born in 1971 in Te Kopuru (Waitaha iwi, Bay of Plenty)
Adrian Jackman currently resides and works in Carterton, South Wairarapa. He holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, which he obtained in 1997.
He was awarded the Joe Raynes Masters Scholarship from Auckland University in 1996 and received the Senior Prize in Fine Arts from the same institution in 1993. In 2012, He was the distinguished Tylee Cottage Residency Awards recipient in Whanganui in 2012
Adrian has been a consistent finalist in several prestigious art competitions, including the Molly Morpeth Canady Award, the National Contemporary Art Award, the Goldwater Art Award, the N.Z. Painting & Printmaking Award, the Team McMillan BMW Art Award, and the Walker & Hall Art Awards.
His work is represented in numerous public, private, and corporate collections both in New Zealand and internationally, including, The Sarjeant Gallery, Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui, the Citibank Art Collection, Perpetual Guardian Trust and The Arts House Trust.
Adrian sees the artists role as one to make sense of their surroundings, navigating through new technological or environmental systems to suggest a new psychological space, much like we do in a cinematic world. He focuses on discovering new painterly narratives, while hinting at ideas of ‘glitch aesthetics’ and ‘digital disruption’.
Adrian’s paintings are collaged from a broad range of found images often zooming into isolated spaces or layers of collected objects that are melded with technology. He has continued to investigate a hyper associated colour and illuminating palette as his personal and signature approach to painting.
The real and the simulated inhabit the same space and are accorded the same importance. Themes such as The Arcade and Videogames are present, hinting at a digital future not yet fully realised that lures us into a realm of saturated colour and hi-resolution spaces.
